Some of the best pixel art indie games that I have curated or ones that just hit you right in the nostalgia with their retro feel.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap

developed by Lizardcube, published by DotEmu  |  Platforms: Windows (possibly Mac, Linux, & consoles)

“Cursed into a half-human, half-lizard monstrosity by the Meka-Dragon, a lonesome adventurer is facing the challenge of a lifetime! In search for a cure, our mutated anti-hero will explore the many traps of Monster Land… and defeat many stuff-throwing, curse-wielding dragons. How many more transformations can one hopeful body survive as it turns into a Lizard, a Mouse, a Piranha, a Lion, and a Hawk…”

This is a reverse engineered remake of Sega’s Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap.  The developer took apart the code in the original to see how it all worked and has teamed up with an artist to create an authentic (but enhanced) follow up.  You can read more about the process of deconstruction on their dev log here.

RunGunJumpGun

developed by thirtythreegames  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Android, iOS

“A tough as nails game that puts a gravity-defying weapon in your hands. One button lets you fly, the other blasts obstacles out of the way. With a cast of crazed characters, challenging gameplay, and a pulsing musical score, it delivers twitchy platforming goodness.”

Into the Rift

developed by Weston Tracy  |  Platforms: Windows, iOS

“A game with parkour, melee combat and pixel art.”

“You’ll be a lone adventurer, running, jumping and fighting your way to restore a splintered society. Half of which are bent on destroying you.”

“All born in Sky Valley are born with wildness. Is it tempered by the knowledge of exploration or is it tempered by the promise of myth? The time has come to choose a path: the flowing tapestry of discovery or the statued certainty of tradition. Between these two lies The Rift.”

Beglitched

developed by Hexecutable (Jenny & AP)  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac

“A game about insecurity, in our computers and ourselves. In a pastel world of networks where nobody truly knows what they’re doing, hacking is a magical art and the notorious Glitch Witch is the most premium archmagi of the net.

“Through what appears to be nothing more than random circumstance, YOU are her new apprentice. You must use your wits and cunning to unravel the mechanisms of an alien computer and survive amongst a veritable web of clowns, leftclickers, and filedraggers.”
