Some of the best pixel art indie games that I have curated or ones that just hit you right in the nostalgia with their retro feel.

Moonlighter

developed by Digital Sun Games  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux

“An action RPG game with rogue-lite elements about Will, an adventurous shopkeeper, that secretly dreams of becoming a hero.  To earn the daily bread, he needs to venture into the dungeons near his town, defeat strange enemies and obtain loot to be sold at his shop.

“Wisely managing the gold from those sales is the only way he’ll get strong enough to risk into deeper gates and, maybe, open the sealed one. Moonlighter has endless randomly generated dungeons, a myriad of cool and expensive items, many weapons, dozens of weird enemies, five incredibly tough bosses and gold… tonnes of gold!”

Wizard of Legend on Kickstarter

developed by Contingent99  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux

[gfycat data_id="MenacingPointedCobra"][gfycat data_id="EntireShadyDartfrog"][gfycat data_id="TinyComplexKob"]

“A fast paced dungeon crawler with rogue-like elements where you assume the role of a powerful wizard intent on overcoming the Chaos Trials to become the next Wizard of Legend.

“Exploration of the dungeons is a seamless experience as you travel from one room to the next in search of powerful spells and items to aid you on your quest. All of the dungeon layouts are procedurally generated and are comprised of both randomly generated rooms as well as precrafted experiences.

“Combat in Wizard of Legend is a blend of rapid movement and magic that involves chaining spells together to defeat enemies while quickly repositioning to avoid incoming attacks. The use of dashing spells is key in allowing you to control the pace of combat by staying at an optimal range to cast spells at enemies near and far.”

Dandara

developed by Long Hat House  |  Platforms: iOS, Android, possibly PC in the future

“A metroidvania carefully designed for mobile phones, we considered how you could achieve exploration and fast action with the touchscreen. The result was a bizarre, gravity-less world, with hidden beauty. Jumping from surface to surface, it’s up to Dandara to restore order and direct a direction-less world!”

Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime on Kickstarter

developed by Spiritus Games  |  Platform: Windows, possibly Mac & Linux

[gfycat data_id="ScholarlyAchingHowlermonkey"][gfycat data_id="UnitedSophisticatedAnhinga"][gfycat data_id="LegitimateEvergreenAntarcticfurseal"]

“A Medieval Space-folktale with action-RPG and roguelike influences. You explore an abstract, storybook-like universe as a young space-knight in your trusty ship that functions as your armour, your figurative warhorse and your mobile home as well. You need to manage your resources, upgrade your ship, be skillful in combat and make the right choices during encounters.”

Fabular is currently in its last week on Kickstarter and is edging pretty close to its goal.  Hopefully it’ll cross the finish line soon. :)

Super Combat Squadron

developed by Lax Viking  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android

[gfycat data_id="IdenticalGoldenHagfish"][gfycat data_id=""]

“A casual approach to the RTS genre; easy to learn and play with no base building aspects. The game focuses on CO’s with special powers, capture points that generate resource, and controlling/positioning your units effectively.”

Definitely inspired by Advance Wars, just done in real time and coming to PC.  There will be online multiplayer, as well as a map editor and the ability to play on user created maps.  Still has a ways to go in development.

Dr. Spacezoo

developed by SmashRiot  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux

[gfycat data_id="FemaleExaltedIchneumonfly"][gfycat data_id="SinfulBrilliantBeagle"][gfycat data_id="SoggyMiniatureAmericanbobtail"]

“A chaotic twin-stick precision shoot-em-up packed full of gibs and grease for 1-4 players. Blast through procedurally generated Space Zoos to rescue exotic space animals in a chaotic bullet-hell shoot-em-up. Or reduce them to gibs. Your call, monster.”

Dr. Spacezoo released on Early Access yesterday.  I first featured the game on Screenshot Daily way back in December 2014, which was the first month of me starting up the site, so it’s got a special little place in my heart. =)  I’m definitely super biased, but please take a visit to the Steam Page below!

VirtuaVerse

developed by Theta Division Games, art by Valenberg  |  Platforms: Unannounced

[gfycat data_id="NastyDifficultHumpbackwhale"][gfycat data_id=""]

A cyberpunk point and click adventure game.  There really isn’t much info on this at all, but I love Valenberg’s pixel art so at the very least it should turn out to be pretty.  There’s a music track below which was a collaboration between Victor Love and Dynatron.

The website for the game doesn’t seem to be up and running yet, but you can follow Theta Division Games on twitter.

Tower Of Samsara

developed by Martelo Nero  |  Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux

[gfycat data_id="ColossalRemarkableIzuthrush"][gfycat data_id="AdoredSpecificBass"][gfycat data_id="SizzlingDescriptiveEarthworm"]

“A pixel art platformer where you will struggle for ascension”

“The player embodies a shadow spirit, a life form from planet Pluto which finds the deities light wandering nearby. Moved by its own curiosity, it then finds this light, which grants it the blessing and powers that will be needed to venture forth toward the unknown in order to break the Samsara.”
