A retro space strategy inspired by a mix of BattleStar Galactica and FTL.  I recommend reading through the Kickstarter as there seems to be quite a lot of depth mixed with tough managerial decisions.  Currently in development for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

“Command a ragtag fleet of starships against an unbeatable enemy. You’ll be evacuating refugees, scrounging for resources, overcoming political treachery, and assembling your flock from one jump point to the next. Your goal is to lead what’s left of humanity out of reach from the unknown threat that pursues.”

Defect: Spaceship Destruction Kit

developed by Three Phase Interactive

A top down mission based space shooter, where you design your own ship that you are destined to lose.

“Build a ship, complete a mission and wave it goodbye when your crew defect to the other side. Then design a new ship to hunt down those mutinous traitors in an endless cycle of punishment and revenge. Don’t make that new design too good though, because odds are you’ll be fighting it pretty soon.”

Defect is currently in development for Windows and Mac, with a release on Linux, iPad, and Android tablets planned.  You’ll be able to share your creations with your friends across all platforms. Two days left on the Kickstarter, and it’s almost reached its goal. :)

“A satellite launching simulator with a retro-puzzle style. Launch your satellite into orbit and go head to head with the dominant force that formed the entire universe: Gravity.”

The developer is also doing a beginner series on learning shaders in Unity3D, so if you’re interested, definitely check out the first part here.

A top down space shooter which you can play in your web browser (if you have the Unity plugin).  The team is currently trying to improve and polish the game in order to get it on to Steam.

“Pilot three different ships with special maneuvers and each with their own fantastic abilities to destroy your enemies. Pillage loot they leave behind to outfit your ship becoming even more powerful. Warp from system to system to take on larger and stronger waves of enemies. Death is the end but the glory from your battle will carry on.”

Planet Glitch

[gfycat data_id="ImperturbableCoolGibbon"]

I came across Planetarium, a pixel art planet generator on itch.io, and thought it would be really cool to make a post with the rotating pixel art planets of our solar system.  Alas, you can’t make stars or gas planets. :(

I entered some of the easter egg codes, and thought the glitched planet aptly represented my broken dreams for this endeavour.  It also looks kinda neat.

It’s not a game, just a random planet generator with nice music and you can check it out on itch.io.  You can see some of the secret codes in this thread.

Descendants: Voidborne

developed by Mob Made Games.

“A 4X game in the spirit of Civilization or Masters of Orion but with fast matches that take place sequentially in the same persistent universe. Play as the descendants of your previous civilizations as you explore the infinite depths of space and witness the consequences of your decisions from previous rounds.”

Still in early development, but this is a really good video that explains how the game works, with the persistent worlds and descendants of your previous decisions.

StarDiver

developed by Gravity Ride.

“A story-driven action/rpg that spans numerous star systems and is teeming with alien life, conflict, and dying stars in desperate need of saving.”

A space opera influenced by StarFlight, Star Control, and SunDog.  Being developed by a family team of husband (programming), wife (art), and son (sound/music) for PC and Xbox One.

“The deeper I descend into the fire.  Layer by layer.  My soul is stripped of fear and I join eternity at the heart of all stars.  Through this lens, I now see.”

Fleet Harvester

by Caedicus.

“A third person space combat game, that focuses on battles between large fleets.“

Still in very early development.  Currently there’s a sandbox mode that allows you to spawn large fleets in the overview camera, and then take control of any ship (even the large ones) to take part in the ensuing battle.
