Some of the best pixel art indie games that I have curated or ones that just hit you right in the nostalgia with their retro feel.

Gongbat

by Zack Harmon.

A shmup centred around fighting massive bosses with colourful and detailed pixel art.  Featuring an ancient bat that can transform into various forms to unleash its fury.

“Take down colossal boses, tear apart the world around you, and summon the powers of sound.”

Developed completely solo using GameMaker.  I quite like the music as well, it’s from the band Ace Poison which the developer is a part of.  You can take a listen and download it on Bandcamp here.

The game just came out and I haven’t played it yet, as my internet connection hates me.  :(

Bezel

by Onion Core.

A pixel art side scrolling RPG with a focus on exploration.

“You find yourself on an uncharted island being ravaged by monsters and wild animals.”  Charming.

There’s a lot of emphasis on deep character customization, and creating a character with exactly the look you want (body type/race/gender/accessories etc).  I have to single out the amount of hats.  One can never have too many hats!

Ghost Song

developed by Old Moon Games.

An actual (super?) metroidvania that’s been in development for a few years, and is hopefully coming out at the end of 2015.  While it definitely looks like a modern Super Metroid, the game is also supposed to borrow elements from Dark Souls.   No hand holding with the gameplay.  :)  The mix definitely gives it a great looking atmosphere.

Remnant

developed by Death, art by Raymond Schlitter, which make up Minerion Studios.

A 2D puzzle platformer in very early development.  You have the ability to shapeshift into various animals (a bird, a monkey, a bull, and a dog), which you’ll need to use in order to navigate the underground labyrinth.

I probably should have waited until this was further along, but that dog strut is too awesome not to share.  I’ll most likely post about it again when it’s closer to release, if it’s still looking good. ;)

Untitled, developed by Studio Thunderhorse with art by Johan Aronson.

An endless mobile runner for iOS.  It’s only been in development for a week, but the art already looks pretty stunning.  Being made by the same team that is creating Laser Fury (co-op action RPG), which also has great pixel art (see below).

Not sure if the timing on the split GIF will be correct for everyone.  I banged my head on my desk for far too long trying different ways to get it to play nice. >.<

Blood Alloy: Reborn

by Suppressive Fire Games.

An acrobatic 2D score attack shooter coming to all major platforms.  Blood Alloy in its final form is intended to be a full fledged Metroidvania, but for now the developers are focused on releasing a shooter with a smaller scope, which will hopefully be successful enough to support their bigger ideas.

Concept art drawn by Aaron Nakahara.
